Pre Menstrual Syndrome 80 - Pre-menstrual Syndrome and Chinese Herbs - Angelica Root (Dong quai)

Premenstrual syndrome effects over 70% to 90% of women before menopause in the US and less for women in Southeast Asia because of their difference in living style and social structure. It is defined as faulty function of the ovaries related to the women’s menstrual cycle, it effects a women’s physical and emotional state, and sometimes interferes with daily activities as a result of hormone fluctuation. The syndrome occurs one to two weeks before menstruation and then declines when the period starts. In this article, we will discuss how Chinese herbs - angelica root (dong quai) effects women with PMS.

I. Definition

According to Chinese herbalist, Chinese angelica root is considered as a queen of all herbs, it has been used in treating women reproductive disorder over thousand of year including pre menstrual cramps, regulating menstrual periods, and lessening menopausal symptoms.

II. How Chinese herbs - Angelica synthesis (Dong quai) effects women with PMS.

1. Resin

Chinese angelica root contains resin which is vital for improving the immune system fighting against the premenstrual symptoms caused by negative allergic reaction, inflammation caused by abnormal cell growth and infection, including breast tenderness.

2. Sedative

It also contains valerianic acid, it helps to calm the nervous system in controlling the body muscles including the uterus muscles resulting in lessening the risk of premenstrual pain and cramps for some women with PMS.

3. Water retention and weight gain

The chemical agent of coumarins which helps to treat lymphatic obstruction resulting in improving the lymphatic function in regulating the body fluid and reducing risk of water retention and weight gain.

4. Antispasmodic

Chinese angelica root also contains bitter iridoids which helps to suppress the muscles spam caused by hormone imbalance for some women with PMS, thereby, decreasing the risk of over active muscle and pre menstrual pain and cramps.

5. Kidney

The chemical agent tannins in the plant only helps to improving the immune system and enhancing the nervous system function but also helps to increase the kidney function in urinary secretion, thereby, decreasing the risk of fluid retention and breast tenderness.
