What is the difference between Panax Ginseng and Siberian Ginseng?Answered By Glenda Fiddler Let's begin with cultivating and harvesting ginseng… One of the reasons the price of Ginseng may sometimes seem a bit steep is due to the long cultivation process. The cultivation of a Panax Ginseng crop takes from five to nine years to grow to a harvestable root size. On the other hand, Siberian Ginseng (Eleutherococcus Senticosus) consists of dried roots and root parts of a spiny, stemmed shrub that may be harvested within one year, generally making it cheaper to buy than true Panax Ginseng. Another significant difference is the healing properties of ginseng… Panax Ginseng is scientifically proven to enhance energy and promote overall well- being. In recent years consumers could also find other products labeled "ginseng" such as Siberian Ginseng. However, according to extensive testing, the Siberian plant contains none of the beneficial compounds (also known as ginsenosides) found in Panax. In fact, some will argue whether "Siberian Ginseng" is actually a "ginseng" at all. Now, that finding has been made a law, and any product that claims to be ginseng but is not derived from the genus Panax must be taken off shelves. Said Barbara Levine, RD, PhD, director of the Nutrition Information Center at Weill Medical College of Cornell University, "The magnitude of this new law is quite significant for consumers. With the overwhelming array of ginseng supplements on the market, this legislation will decrease confusion, allowing consumers to make more informed decisions regarding the types of products they purchase. This is just one example of how the government is taking a stronger stand in regulating supplements, which should reassure consumers." With that said, Siberian Ginseng is a
very worthwhile root (more on that later).
Just don't assume that because it is
labeled "Ginseng" that you are getting the
same effectiveness as another package
labeled "Ginseng." Read the labels
carefully. Know the different types of
ginseng — what are the benefits of ginseng,
know exactly what you are getting and learn
how to choose the best ginseng.
